It's debateable if anyone really likes clowns in the first place, and after Tim Curry's criminally overlooked portrayal of Pennywise the Clown in Stephen King's 'It' it isn't surprising that there's a full-blown phobia of them.

Whether it's just the make-up or the deranged cheeriness that makes those with Coulrophobia run for the hills we don't know.
