Status Quo legend Francis Rossi has cut off his trademark ponytail. At 35 years, it's estimated to be the longest relationship a rock star has ever held down. Rossi admitted his once "fashion icon" head of hair was now too thin, dated and silly to pull off, so he opted for the snip and went short.

By far the easiest of the styles, the classic short cut requires next to no maintenance. But do try to keep it short all over - patchy is for tramps. George Clooney has got the right idea.

Use something on it (a wax or paste) to give it some sense of fashion and lift or you'll look like an oversized tennis ball.
