The greatest conspiracy films ever made
Capricorn One (1978)
Did we actually land on the moon? Many have speculated that it was all a hoax, and this brilliantly tense film proposes that a landing on Mars was all filmed in a studio. NASA authorities notice at the last minute that their shuttle destined for the red planet doesn't have a working life support system so instead of cancelling the mission (and wasting all that government funding), they blast it off to space, minus the astronauts.
The bewildered crew are rushed off to an airbase in the middle of dessert and forced to act out the landing for the cameras – they are told it's their patriotic duty. While the astronauts are trapped, a journalist on the outside pieces together the puzzle. The shuttle crew then realise that when they fulfil their obligations to the hoax, they will have to be killed… A true classic of the 1970s paranoia era.
