6. Stephenson's rocket
Though other steam trains had been invented 25 years earlier, Robert Stephenson's 'Rocket' in 1829 was the world's first modern steam locomotive, adopting several recent technological improvements.
Its design set the standard for 150 years and after the Rocket's success, the railways expanded quickly. For the first time, huge numbers of people were able to move across the world.
