Unforgettable movie heists
'Rififi' (1955)
One of the coolest French crime thrillers ever made, 'Rififi' tells the tale of one big score that will have its crooks set for life. Without guns, getaway cars or any other brash objects, these cool thieves ingeniously tunnel through the roof in one of cinema's most memorable moments.
So they don't set off the sensors, the robbery is carried out in complete silence with no dialogue or musical score whatsoever. Director Jules Dassin also depicts the flawless crime in real time (going on half an hour) so we see every detail, expertly notching up the suspense. It was so inspirational that real life criminals have repeatedly (and successfully) copied the theft themselves.
