When music legends form supergroups
Them Crooked Vultures
Formed: 2009-
The lineup: Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)
The story: With Homme on guitars, Grohl on drums and Jones on bass, this union represents one very loud supergroup. Their paths have crossed before (with Grohl drumming for Homme in QOTSA, Jones performing mandolin duties for the Foos) but the combination of the three hard rocking legends cemented their self-titled album with dizzying riffs, twisted lyrics and surprisingly funky grooves.
Grohl reverts to pounding drums, Jones handles the bass and keys while Homme adds some killer licks on the guitar and vocals - the most expressive three piece since Cream?
After Grohl initially revealed the lineup, all he mischievously left us with was: "That's the next album. That wouldn't suck." Given his previous success in picking rock bands, it was predictable that he would be right.
