Sesame Street is back in the news currently, due to an online petition to get the characters Bert and Ernie to marry in a same-sex ceremony.

Campaigners say the best friends should tie the knot to encourage tolerance of gay people, but the makers of the US kids show are having none of it, saying:

They remain puppets and do not have a sexual orientation.
