It was recently revealed that Commons Speaker John Bercow charged taxpayers with £624 just to have his chauffeur drive him to Devon for a ‘breathless’ night with his wife Sally. The night in question occurred back in August, right before Sally entered the Celebrity Big Brother show. Bercow was driven by his official limo 224 miles from Westminster to his favourite seaside resort Woolacombe in Devon.
Reports say that Bercow was opposed to his wife’s participation in the show. Sally, however, confessed that she used sex that night to get her husband to agree with her appearing on the show. “I just used my feminine wiles,” she said. “I have him a weekend he wouldn’t forget, which left him happy, if breathless.” The speaker, she said, ‘eventually gave in’. These comments came after reports of marriage trouble surfaced, with her desire to join the TV programme identified as the primary reason.
Bercow was in Devon on holiday last August when he was called to chair a one-day debate on summer riots. After the debate ended at 8 in the evening, he took the official car back to Woolacombe. The figures were obtained from official records under the Freedom of Information Act.
Had Bercow taken the train instead of having his chauffeur drive him, he would have arrived at Woolacombe the next day and would have missed one night with his wife.
Some people say, however, that he should have just caught the 11:45 PM Night Riviera sleeper service to Barnstaple and took a taxi for 11 miles to Woolacombe. This would have brought him back to his wife by 8 in the early morning, saving taxpayers around £550.
