Sporting firsts that broke new ground
First sportsman to earn $1billion
Tiger Woods has been making history since he joined the PGA tour in 1996, and new ground was broken again in 2009 when he became the first athlete to earn 10 figures according to Forbes.
The champion golfer first set a record with a $40m contract from Nike. He then won the Masters by a record 12 strokes the following year, becoming the youngest winner ever.
The closest competitors when it comes to career earnings among sports stars are basketball legend Michael Jordan and F1 driver Schumacher, who dominated their respective sports for nearly 15 years.
