Palmer may have worked hard on the pitch but his reputation in the locker room was terrible. He was renowned for being abrasive and argumentative with teammates and management.

Upon retiring he entered into the management game and took up a position at Mansfield. However public hatred soon forced him to quit, stating: "I have had a good career and I don't need to take the abuse from the crowd".
