As a child and even as an adult, dreams have always remained a complete mystery. Dreams happen soon after we turn off the light (literally and figuratively) as our unconscious minds bring us to the uncharted recesses of our minds.
This is the concept emulated by Ana Somnia (so uncannily sounding like “insomnia”), a generative art that makes use of an autonomous system that independently creates an artwork which is seemingly spontaneous and incongruous, but only as far as it has been programmed by its creator.
In Ana Somnia the web creator involves you both as an observer to and a participant in Ana’s journey to the dreamland. The webcam in your computer can see if your lights are on. If you choose to leave it on you have to turn the lights off on Ana’s room by clicking the switch.
Switch the lights off to start your journey to Ana’s dream, which could be your dream. Meet the animated, odd characters that walk, fly or crawl, grow, disappear and resurrect repeatedly at some point.
The cool thing is that though Ana has no control over her dream, you have. If watching the dream proves to be too much for you, just switch the light back on; but if you find it quite mystifying, you can go right ahead and start dreaming all over again.
