Stroke-on-Trent City Council has revealed plans to install security cameras in bus shelters across the city to help curb anti-social behaviour and improve traffic flow.
Councillor Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, transport and heritage, said: “We have ambitious plans for growth and modernisation in Stoke-on-Trent, and a big part of that is making sure we have a transport network that is fit-for-purpose and meets the city’s needs.
“While bus companies are private firms that are free to make their own commercial decisions, we are obviously keen to work with them and provide whatever support and assistance we can in order to maintain a good level of public transport for residents in the city.
“CCTV at bus stops is being considered as part of a wider, ongoing programme of bus stop improvements. However, it’s important to stress no final decisions have been made at this stage.”
Labour group leader Mohammed Pervez added: “It is a good idea if the council can put CCTV at key strategic locations because it would help safety and it would protect bus shelters, which every year get smashed to pieces. People need to feel safe and we need to be able to put but shelters in the city.
“I would like to ask why these have chosen these areas. If they do put them in, it would be worth moving them around to trouble spots.”
