The Internet of Things (IoT) has found its ways to the field of sports, changing how people watch their favourite games and the way games are played. The use of connectivity-enabled and internet-ready embedded devices is definitely a game-changer. Players can be outfitted with sensors to gather information that can be used to:
· Measure on-field performance
· Measure impact
· Boost safety
· Track and analyse players’ movements
· Measure physiological data and hydration levels
· Access performance and control monitoring in gyms
· Analyse and sense the right muscle movement
· Capture unique game views
Sports venues are also taking advantage of IoT to ensure that sensors, WiFi, intruder alarms, thermostats, door entry systems, digital displays, smart meters and even electronic ticketing provide players and fans convenience, improved safety, and better experience.
But perhaps the best benefit that IoT in sports can offer is the added protection for players. For example, a sensor can be placed in players’ helmets to measure impact. The information gathered can be sent to the coach and medical team, which allows doctors to easily determine if it is safe for players to continue playing.
