112-year-old Gladys Hooper is officially Britain’s oldest living person after the UK’s last Victorian, Ethel Lang died last week at the age of 114.
Celebrating her birthday today with her family and friends at her home on the Isle of Wight, she revealed her secret to long life.
Reacting to the news that she’s official the oldest person in the country, she said: “I am very surprised – I thought I was just the oldest person on the island.”
She added: “The secret of my success is I’ve always been busy. I prefer being busy to being idle. Being active keeps you young.
“What I don’t like about now is I can’t get about like I used to.
“I have always lived a straight life, never done stupid things. I have never gone beyond the limit.
“I have done what I wanted to do and helped others as much as I could. I do not feel anything like the age I am – I do not feel any different to when I was 70.”
Born in 1903, she does not think that the world has changed so much in her life time.
“Things haven’t got any better, there’s so much trouble in the world.
