Premier Bet look at December’s sporting action and ways to make a world star bet!
Farewell to the Champions League… until February
12:56 17 December 2020
The Champions League group stages are over and the draw for the next round has set up some exciting ties. Neymar will come up against Barcelona for the first time since he left the Nou Camp in 2017 – can he get the better of his old friend Lionel Messi? Chelsea have a tricky tie against Atletico while Liverpool, winners in 2019, take on last season’s semi-finalists RB Leipzig. The reigning champions, Bayern Munich, will play Lazio. Will they retain their title? Make your world star bet now on the Premier Bet website.
There have been some big casualties, too. Serie A giants Inter Milan came fourth in Group B, picking up just one win from six games against Real Madrid, Monchengladbach and Shakhtar Donetsk. That outcome means that they have not participated in the round of 16 since 2011-12!
Meanwhile, Manchester United have dropped to the Europa League after they finished third in Group H. This comes as a surprise after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side beat PSG and RB Leipzig in their opening two games. However, they lost three of their following four fixtures to finish third in the standings and will now face Real Sociedad in the Europa League knockout stages. Can the Red Devils win the whole competition?
Pressure mounts in the Premier League
The focus for England’s top teams, though, now moves back to the Premier League.
Injuries to defensive duo Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez has left Liverpool’s defence significantly weaker, though, and a run of poor results away from home suggests that they cannot rekindle the spark that saw them win the league so easily last season.
Similarly, we are yet to see the best of Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side have been the top scorers in each of the last three campaigns but are yet to reach their potential in 2020-21. Will the return of Sergio Aguero change that? The Argentine is the club’s all-time top scorer and, at 32, still knows how to find the net. Given the quality of his team mates, it’s not too late to rule him out of the race for the Golden Boot.
Could this open the door for Tottenham to win a first title in 60 years? Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min are challenging Sadio Mane and Mo Salah for their crown as the league best attacking duo. Jose Mourinho has been a champion on three occasions already – can he make it four?
The NBA is back
More great news as the NBA returns! Last season saw Los Angeles Lakers beat Miami Heat in the finals to win their 17th championship thanks to LeBron James. The Lakers are back in action on the opening day of the new season as they take on their local rivals, the Clippers. These are the only two sides in the NBA that share the same stadium! At least LeBron won’t have far to travel…
