This year is a pivotal year for hair trends, after several years in which trends have evolved around the same few basic ideas, we are starting to see real change. Classic, uniform colours are giving way to subtler shades and dyed hair that incorporates streaks in multiple shades, giving it the depth of hair au naturel, while curls and waves are breaking free from restraints and big hair is on the way back.
Here are some of the new styles turning heads in 2016.
Luxurious layers
Layered hair is a big thing this year, in both short and long styles. A clever stylist can shape the layers to enhance your strongest facial features, and you can use hairspray to lift them and curl the ends inwards when you really want to make them stand out.
The look that is really grabbing attention has long hair flowing down over the shoulders with shorter layers cut to chin length to frame the face. You can use hair extensions from Hair Planet to achieve this effect if you do not have long locks.
On the fringe
Another way to frame the face nicely is to choose a style with a fringe; these are back this year, and look particularly good in darker shades. Even a short fringe can make a statement, especially if you use a high-gloss conditioner so it catches the eye, and gently curling it ensures it will keep a defined shape, rather than sticking to your face. Talk to your stylist about finding the right length to flatter your face shape.
Roaring 20s
If you fancy something fancier, take a look at some of the ultra-glamorous 1920s styles that are returning after almost a century. You will need to get your curlers out for some of these, but many are easier to achieve than you might expect. If you already have chin-length, evenly-cut hair, you can simply sweep it across to one side, clip it in place above your ear and curl the ends to create a striking look that really grabs attention.
That sidelong look
Asymmetric styles are really big this season. Short hair can make a big impression in an asymmetric bob, especially in a strong colour. Long hair fits the trend when it is cut diagonally, falling to a point over one shoulder. This is an especially good style for fine hair, as it creates a dramatic shape that does not depend on volume. It needs to be trimmed frequently to maintain the look, however, and it works best when combined with clothes in contrasting colours with high necklines.
The really interesting thing about these styles is that they suggest we can look forward to a lot more diversity over the next few years. This is good news for all women, because it will make it easier to find a look that works for you, regardless of the shape of your face. So, give one of these fabulous styles a try and bring your look up to date.
