David Ward, product marketing manager of Makino, has predicted that greater throughput, faster delivery, enhanced quality, and lower cost will push aerospace production machine toward more automation and digital connections.
Ward said: “The aerospace manufacturing facility of the not-so-distant future is going to be extremely efficient, utilizing data and automation to maximize machine utilization, uptime and performance,”
Makino, which specialises in controlling software, machines, and accessories to manufacture aircraft and jet engine components, is now focusing on making machines that are smarter and more efficient. Recently, it introduced its latest Super Geometric Intelligence software called SGI.5, which has been described by the company’s vertical machining product manager as “the next-generation Makino advancement, culminating a decade of leadership in high-speed, high accuracy motion control in complex 3D-contouring application.”
The company’s redesigned MMC2 automated pallet-handling system is now being used together with 5-axis machining center to yield higher processing speeds and more flexibility allowing aerospace manufacturers to quickly adapt to customers’ just-in-time needs for complex, multidimensional parts. According to Ward, the machining center is so fast, some firms had been having trouble keeping it fed with raw materials.
With MMC2, manufacturers can achieve spindle utilisation rate as high as 95per cent.
