The £3billion warship is the deadliest vessel ever built. It is also the most advanced that it shows up on enemy radar as a fishing boat. Named the USS Zumwalt, it is the naval version of stealth bomber. It has powerful hidden guns that can attack enemies at a range of more than 60 miles.
With an incredible array of high-tech features, it has been described as the Starship Enterprise of the seas. It has angular shape and has British-built electric propulsion system making it extremely difficult to detect.
Captained by James Kirk, the futuristic American destroyer took five years to build at the Bath Iron Works in Main. It will be formally commissioned on October 15 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Captain Kirk said: “The 147 sailors of Zumwalt have completed the training and certifications required of them in record time. They have demonstrated superb technical expertise, teamwork and toughness over the past three months.
“It’s time for us to do our job at sea.”
Asked about the similarities to Star Trek, he joked: “I have been ribbed every now and then with people saying, ‘yes, you’re going where no man has gone before – on this class of ship’.”
