Madonna has been making the rounds for her MDNA World Tour, but it was recently confirmed by concert promoters that all tour dates set for Australia have been cancelled.
This is the third tour in which Madonna has bypassed Australia. In the last two tours, her camp cited logistics and financial reasons behind the country’s exclusion. This year, however, the promoter Live Nation did not give any reason.
A spokesperson simply said: “Madonna’s tour will end in South America in December as planned. That’s all we can say.”
According to Australian media sources, however, stadiums in Sydney and Melbourne had already been booked for the Australian leg of the MDNA tour schedule for next year. This happened after Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary appeared to have made a commitment to do an Australian tour after the Sticky and Sweet tour was concluded in 2009.
He said: “We are long overdue for a trip Down Under and apologise for that. It will happen.”
Thus, the cancellation surprised many fans and they took to social media to voice their anger.
One Twitter user from Sydney said: “I guess Madonna is too busy promoting her non-charting singles in major music markets like Romania and Bulgaria to tour Australia.”
Music journalist Cameron Adams also said: “Madonna Australian 2013 tour is officially cancelled. No reason given. She’s just not coming. Again.”
As of press time, Madonna is still in the middle of her European tour, where some of her concerts have stirred controversy after she flashed a nipple in Istanbul and superimposed an image of the swastika in Paris.
