A spokewoman for Heathrow airport has confirmed that 50 flights were canceled due to the weather and advised affected passengers to contact their airlines. This comes after British families travel back to the UK on the final day of their half-term holiday.
The spokeswoman said: "The fog has been quite bad today.
"We've had to cancel flights to keep up with the schedule. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines."
She added that the fog is expected to clear by 3pm and that no more cancellation or delays are expected. However, a weather expert said that the fog might return tomorrow morning causing more disruptions.
Paul Knightley, a weather forecaster at MeteoGroup, said: "There is fog and low cloud around from Essex to Devon, through parts of the West Midlands, up to Shropshire and Worcestershire and Merseyside.
"The thick fog is expected to return again tonight so Heathrow could be pretty foggy again tomorrow morning."
Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for fog across England and Wales.
It said: "Areas of fog are expected to form during Sunday night becoming widespread and dense in places by Monday morning.
"Travel may be impacted by poor visibility, with some minor disruption expected."
The chief forecaster added: "A slack, moist airmass lying across much of England will allow fog to readily form again on Sunday night, reducing visibility to less than 100m at times.
