Veteran musician Sir Elton John has many golden years to his name, but the famous singer recently confessed that he had ruined some of the best years of his life by being addicted to drugs.
Sir Elton John’s regretful confession about his past dependence on drugs occurred during an interview for Today. According to the singer, now 65 years old, he “wasted such a big part of my life. I was a drug addict and self-absorbed.” The rest of the interview is set to air on Today in the coming week.
He confessed that even as a number of his closest associates died due to drug addiction, he had found it hard to recover from his addiction. He said, “You know, I was having people die right, left, and center around me, friends. And yet I didn’t stop…which is the terrible thing about addiction.”
“It’s that bad of a disease,” he concluded.
This is not the only occasion that Sir Elton John opened up on his past drug problem. In an interview with Piers Morgan in 2010, he is remembered to have said that he “came very close” to dying due to drugs. He recounted stories about having epileptic seizures during which he would turn blue. “Forty minutes later, I’d be snorting another line,” he said.
This confession, however, does not match the media havoc he reached when he admitted his homosexuality back in 1976.
