The new Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises” has sold over 60,000 BFI Imax tickets and grossed over £1 million in pre-sales, consequently beating ‘Avatar’ in both records.
“The Dark Knight Rises” will conclude Christopher Nolan’s wildly successful Batman trilogy, making it a highly anticipated film. No wonder it has raked in as much as £1 million in advance booking. The London cinema BFI Imax announced its figures, which totals 62,300 two days before the film’s July 20 opening.
The last time new records were set was in 2009, when James Cameron’s Avatar sold 47,000 tickets and brought in £607,000 prior to the film’s opening.
Aside from that, the film also broke two other records for the highest first day sales and the highest first week sales. The film has made a total of £409,838 from a first-day sale of 27,754 tickets and a total of £634,013 from a first-week sale of 38,658 tickets. Both records were held by Prometheus before The Dark Knight Rises swooped in. Prometheus was released just months earlier this year.
In response to this, BFI Imax are already adding shows, with Dennis Laws, General and Technical Manager calling the film’s Imax showing an “unmissable event this summer”.
The second installment of the Batman trilogy “The Dark Knight” was the first major feature film to be shot partially using IMAX cameras. The movie was met with phenomenal success and encouraged more usage of the IMAX format for the third and final installment. Sure enough, in The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale will be playing the caped crusader in IMAX format for over an hour.
