Blackburn CCTV Vandalised

A CCTV camera installed at the bottom of an alleyway behind Shaw Street in Blackburn has been vandalised.

The CCTV was installed by Blackburn with Darwen Council to deter people from dropping rubbish.

 

Cllr Quesir Mahmood was disappointed with the incident. He said: “The council has tried to improve the area for people by installing this camera and it’s been damaged.

 

“This sort of behaviour directly affects people’s lives, fly-tipping is a real problem.”

 

A Shaw Street resident said that the problem with fly-tippers has become serious in recent months. He said: “The rubbish down there has become a real problem, I have lived here for around a year and in recent months it has become really bad.

 

“The smell is horrible, you’ll find everything from bin bags to fridge freezers.

 

“The camera would have helped stop people from dropping rubbish but now people have free rein to drop litter. 

 

Tony Watson, head of service for environment, said: “We are extremely disappointed as this CCTV unit was only recently installed to deter and catch fly-tippers following requests from residents.

 

“We will now remove and examine the camera to establish its extent.

 

“One this has been done, the incident will also be reported to the police.
