Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has announced that the platform has gained 13% in year-over-year advertising revenue. This applies to the second quarter of 2025, and has reached $9.796 billion. Impressive growth like this helps to show how streaming markets are dominating the digital entertainment sector, with YouTube positioning itself as a leader in the industry.
More People Are Watching YouTube on their TV
According to the latest statistics, for the first time, more and more people are watching YouTube on their television rather than watching it on their mobile device. People stream over one billion hours per day, showing that YouTube could well be the new television. Part of this comes down to the fact that YouTube has invested heavily in its live streaming service.
This allows people to go live with music streams, behind-the-scenes footage, or even events, allowing people to connect with the moment in real-time. Interestingly, other entertainment verticals are following this trend as well. We are seeing more and more live events on Netflix and Amazon Prime, and some music acts are even setting up dedicated websites for live streaming.
Even in other entertainment sectors like gaming, specifically within the casino sector, we are also seeing a surge in the number of live casino titles. From blackjack to poker, roulette, and even game-show themed variants, it’s clear to see that more and more people are showing deeper interest in live formats. YouTube embracing this trend has significantly contributed to its success, as it isn’t just a website for short videos; it’s now embracing long-form content and live videos, with the site holding 12% of the streaming market.
Technological Advancements for the Future
While the streaming sector is set to grow, it’s the technology behind it that is helping to drive things forward. By embracing live streaming technology and supporting features, the site has been able to thrive. If you break down the other features the site offers, which include live premieres, it wouldn't be surprising to see things take an even bigger step in this direction.
Fan polls that can be conducted live or choices that can be made to influence what a streamer should do next would be great features to incorporate. Although live chat is certainly a more recent feature, seeing this elevated by creating a more personalised experience would be a good way to go.
Another tech-focused way that YouTube could push ahead of the competition would be to include more user-controlled recommendation modes. Rather than relying on algorithmic recommendations, putting people in the driver’s seat would be a good move. Smarter and more AI-oriented features that would help editors speed up the process would also result in more growth for the platform.
On a more basic level, improving automatic subtitles and translations would be useful, as would making subtitles more widely available across content. This would have to be done at scale, but again, it is a prime example of how YouTube can continue to use emerging technology to its advantage and reign supreme as one of the top streaming services on the market.
