Durham County Council to introduce free public wi-fi to boost Seaham’s recovery.

Free public wi-fi is coming to Seaham next week as part of the council’s bigger plans to boost the town’s economic recovery after coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

 

The installation of free public wi-fi is funded by Durham County Council and carried out by technology integrator North. The free service will be made available from the west end of Church Street to the Marina, and from the north end of North Terrace to Byron Place Shopping Centre.

 

The scheme is hoped to help boost footfall in Seaham town centre and help local businesses recover following the pandemic. A digital support programme will also be launched to help retailers increase their online presence along with a new app that provides heritage tours and promotes retail opportunities.

 

The scheme is a key part of the council’s Towns and Village programme, which is designed to provide support to towns and villages in the county. The programme will also include improving the quality of housing and finding new uses for empty properties, tackling environmental issues, revitalising high streets and investing in transport infrastructure.
