Nurse Jacintha Saldanha was found hanging in her apartment, it has been revealed on Wednesday. Ministers called for an inquiry after Mrs. Saldanha was found dead on Friday, 7thDecember. According to reports, the nurse left a suicide note.
The hoax call that two Australian radio hosts made to the hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge was last week, have said they are ‘heartbroken’ to hear of the death of a nurse who took the call.
It is understood that there is a proposed donation of over £326,000 being made to a memorial fund in honour of Mrs. Saldanha.
This is thought to be being made by 2Day FM radio station owners, Southern Cross Austereo, according to reports.
The two DJ’s spoke of their reactions on hearing the news in interviews with Australian TV programmes, including the show A Current Affair. The pair, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, work on the radio station 2Day FM.
When speaking to the Today Tonight programme, Ms Greig said that since hearing the news concerning Mrs Saldanha's death she has not stopped thinking about it.
She said: “I remember my first question was 'Was she a mother?'"
During the phone call the radio presenters pretended to be members of the royal family, as the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was receiving treatment at the King Edward VII Hospital in London. The Duchess went to hospital last Monday after suffering from morning sickness.
It was Mrs. Saldanha, aged 46, who passed the call to her colleague.
The DJ’s employer has said in a statement that attempts were made to contact the hospital with regards to the call, and reportedly that they believed they had broken no law.
Husband to the late Mrs Saldanha, Ben Barboza, has posted a message on social network site Facebook following the death of his wife. The tribute reads: “I am devastated with the tragic loss of my beloved wife Jacintha in tragic circumstances.”
It continues: “She will be laid to rest in Shirva, India.”
