Proposals to install free public WiFi in Great Yarmouth is currently being taken into consideration by the town’s councillors. The scheme, which is part of an EU-funded project, aims to help businesses by increasing football in town centres.
The scheme would allow the council to build a live digital footprint of marketplace and monitor visitor numbers, dwell time, where they visited and how many times they visited. It will also provide visitors easy access to local news as well as information on tourist attractions and promotional offers.
However, many business owners are not very optimistic about the project, which will cost 10,000 Euro to deploy. Some say that free WiFi alone is not enough reason for people to visit the town centre.
Joao Batista, who runs a Portuguese food stall, said: "In the town centre, where there are not any seats, it is not a reason to attract more people, but it's a good thing for people coming here everyday,"
