Tim Costello from BDX, a marketing firm for the home-building industry, has warned that homebuilders want built-in smart home technologies to encourage consumers to buy new home.
In a conference at the Azione Unlimited last week, he said that DIY home automation, which is like “putting a crate and barrel couch in a new home” isn’t useful to the end customers. “We need things that you can’t do in an old home. Our mission is to sell new homes.”
The conference was attended by Dan Quigley, the principal technical product manager of Alexa Whole Home at Amazon. He said that integrators serve the most discriminating clients and only the pros can ensure a stellar experience around voice and the smart home.
To which Costello suggested, “conceptualize the building from the ground up” and “make a new home such an obvious choice" versus a used home.
He added that builders are now looking for a Wi-Fi certified home making sure that wireless works all over “because people don’t blame anything on Wi-Fi, they blame it on products.”
