Barb, an industry-backed broadcasting data authority, has revealed that the number of Amazon subscribers stopped growing at just shy 4 million subscribers in the third quarter. The figures cover a period prior to the return of The Grand Tour in December.
The same happened to Netflix, which signed up only 150,000 new subscribers during the same period. There are currently 7.5 million UK households that have access to Netflix, which added 22per cent to its total over 12 months.
Sky’s Now TV, on the other hand, has registered an impressive growth during the same period, growing by 70per cent, which translates to additional 600,000 new subscribers.
The report also found that a third of British households now pay for a TV streaming service. It also found that more than half of 16 to 24-year-olds have access to Netflix, which they do not consider a new entrant but a staple service.
Meanwhile, the television industry continues to struggle with how to respond to the rise of streaming service and the massive funding available for programming with international appeal. However, since 2015, the average 216 minutes of traditional television watched per day by Britons has declined by only four minutes.
