Malware and Trojanized APKs

One of the biggest hazards lies in unofficial sources. Several gaming apps, or clones of popular titles, are distributed through APK files rather than official app stores. A recent article noted that India’s mobile-device ecosystem faced an average of 702 potential attacks per minute between October 2023 and September 2024, and 68 % of mobile incidents were trojans or file-infectors.

Financial and In-App Transaction Risks

Many gaming apps rely on in-app purchases, virtual currency top-ups, or subscription models. Those who are only after profiting without quality content are those who usually embed micro-transaction triggers or recurring billing mechanisms that many users easily notice.

Others simulate “rewards” or “coin doubling” to lure extra spending. A think-tank report on India’s online-gaming sector flagged that the ecosystem is ill-equipped to prevent fraud and money-laundering despite a daily player base of some 90 million.

As a user, you might install what looks like a “reward game” only to later find your wallet linked, recurrent charges active, or risky payment gateways enabled without your full understanding. 

Manipulated App Reviews and Fake Ratings

Many gaming apps seek to climb store rankings, and it’s no secret that some of them would resort to buying fake five-star ratings and automated positive reviews. 

Fake reviews can easily hide the flaws of an app, especially when it comes to its security. So, instead of relying on star ratings, users should also take the time to inspect review dates, developer details, permission logs, and update history.

Legal and Regulatory Gaps

India’s regulation of mobile apps in the gaming domain remains fragmented. While the DPDPA promises stronger oversight of personal-data processing, its rules are yet to be fully notified and enforced. 

Meanwhile, the sector of real-money games, in-app wagers, or interactive games has variable state-level laws and enforcement. That legal ambiguity means users have fewer protections when things go wrong. Unless regulation and platform accountability improve, the burden of protection falls on each user.

Choosing safe apps means choosing trusted sources and verifying authenticity. When considering where to download safe and tested online betting apps, users must first evaluate the store, the developer's credentials, and the permissions list.
