New Tottenham manager Jacques Santini claims that France gave him no other choice but to accept the London club's offer.
The France Football Association stalled on Santini's contract extension before the end of Euro 2004 and the Spurs coach believes this tactic forced his hand.
"I did not have a choice. I wanted to continue with the French team," said Santini.
"When you build up something you want to stay on to see it grow.
"I truly believe in our chances at Euro 2004 and I am convinced that afterwards we would have experienced great things.
"But when you are a professional, you have to make choices depending on various elements.'
Santini will lead the France side at Euro 2004 as they bid to retain the title they won four years ago.
"Leaving the French team was not a long-term decision,' Santini added.
"In fact the situation was simple - I had nothing on one side and a few opportunities on the other.'
