Former Dundee University student, Jillian Kowalchuk, is set to launch Safe and The City app designed to warn women about sex crime blackspots in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The app aims to ‘safely route, share and evaluate your walk to stop harassment and create a safer community.’
Ms. Kowalchuk said she developed the app after she was threatened by thugs when Google Maps led her down a dark alley in London.
She said: “Two men got aggressive in what they were saying. I looked back thinking, ‘how could that be prevented?’
“This is about flagging areas which may be dangerous for women, as well as showing some areas are safer than you think.”
“Using it to find my way helped reduce my fear as I could see where crime hotspots were and experiences of other women that could protect me.” Mobiles vibrate near troublespots and the app, left, features a built-in 999 dial.
