Sonia and Martin's marriage is set to hit a further rocky patch in EastEnders this week when the couple learn that the adoptive parents of their natural daughter Chloe have been killed in a car crash.
While a distraught Sonia is overcome by a mother's instinct to make sure the little girl is ok, Martin warns her to stay away, fearing that the more his young wife sees of their estranged daughter, the more she'll want her back.
Ignoring Martin's pleas, Sonia goes behind his back and attends the funeral of Chloe's "parents" after persuading grandfather Jim to go with her.
Posing as a friend of the dead couple, Sonia is shocked at how she feels when she sees her daughter again.
"When they come face to face at the funeral, Sonia is amazed by how much Chloe's grown in the three years since she last saw her," said Natalie Cassidy, who plays Sonia in the BBC soap.
When she returns home, Sonia confesses all to an angry Martin, who reminds her that Chloe is no longer part of their lives.
"It causes some major problems for their marriage," Cassidy told The Sun.
"Sonia's so wrapped up in her concern for Chloe and wanting to see her again that she can't understand why Martin won't support her."
