The formal writing above all must be clear

Without good transitions, the reader will end up confused, which will often make them lose focus or completely discard your writing. If you can cut and paste paragraphs from one section to another without making a substantial rewrite of the paragraphs, your writing needs better transitions. That such rearrangements are easy, implies that you have not been linking your paragraphs in a coherent narrative that reads well from beginning to end. In practice, making smooth transitions is very difficult. Learning to do it requires a lot of effort each time you write or revise a text. A rule of thumb is that every time you change the subject, try to provide a verbal clue that you're doing it, using transition words.
Write literally what you mean
Speakers use many colloquial phrases in an informal conversation, usually with the intention of conveying meanings different from what the words literally indicate. Avoid writing so imprecisely in formal prose: whenever possible, try to make your words mean exactly what they say. The formal writing should be clear to as many people as possible, and its meaning should not depend on local or regional variations of the language.
