Brit films that gripped the nation
8. 'Brief Encounter'
Back in 1945 Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson starred in a great British romance. 'Brief Encounter' was director David Lean's first major success both in popular and critical terms.
Adapted from the 1935 play 'Still Life' the film tells the tale of a man and a woman who meet in a train station. They're both middle aged and both tempted by adultery.
