This "fatty sludge" created by French chemist Hippolyte Mege-Mouries, was made as a substitute for butter. It may the best-selling table spread in the world, but Dr Hankey said: "Margarine contains lots of different fats. The cheapest margarines are using up any oils that are available, so there's no quality in them."
