8. Bal au Moulin de la Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (£49m)
The Moulin de la Galette of the title is a Parisian windmill, with this 1876 work depicting a pleasant Sunday afternoon get-together on its grounds. Rod Stewart also placed himself in it for the cover of his 1976 album 'A Night on the Town'. But it was a real night to remember in 1990 when the final hammer strike in Sotheby's, New York chimed at £49,296,720 ($78,100,000).
