A huge hit in the US, foursquare is rapidly gaining a following on home turf. And with Domino's pizza getting on board it won't be long before other UK businesses are following suit.
What is it?
It's a location-based social networking application designed to get you to connect with friends and "unlock your city". While foursquare is available on your PC, the real value of this application comes with smartphone (iPhone, Android, Blackberry or palm mainly).
Essentially, as a user "checks in" at a venue, they are awarded points to unlock badges. If you're the person to visit there the most, you become that venue's virtual mayor - which could gain you an extra side with your meal or free cup of coffee.
You can also choose to post your check-ins on your Facebook and Twitter account - but here's where this could be potentially dangerous. IF your social site profiles are open for all to see (never a wise move), so are your whereabouts.
foursquare is set to be the next biggest thing since Twitter and after gaining its second set of 1 million users in only 3 months, it is certainly likely to give it a run for its money.
