Solo activities might seem brave to some people, boring to others, and perhaps even lonely. There is something valuable in being able to sit with yourself and be your own person for a little while. After all, you are good company for others, so why not be that for yourself? This is especially important to try when the world is too loud, and you need a break from the constant barrage of information and chaos. Or perhaps you are so accustomed to spending time with others that you realize you need to take some time for yourself. Regardless of the reason, now is a good time to try some activities that are only for you and on your own. Keep reading for inspiration.
Play Chess
You probably wonder how playing chess is a realistic suggestion for one person. When you play chess on your smartphone, everything from the board to the pieces, as well as your opponent, is built in. Even better, this is the ultimate option for portability, so you can play virtually anytime and anywhere you would like to. And with this platform, you never have to worry about finding someone else to play with, even if you are surrounded by people.
Once you begin playing chess online, you will likely become hooked. The strategy will keep you coming back to try to best yourself and your virtual opponent. Go ahead and hone your chess acumen so that you will be ready to best a real opponent when you are ready to take on someone else in real life.
Take on Small Home Repairs
Doing things on your own does not always have to involve finding an entertaining outlet. Since you probably already have a lengthy to-do list, consider checking off one or two things, such as small home repairs, when you want to be alone. Simple tasks, such as changing a flapper on a running toilet or changing outlet covers, are easy enough to do on your own. Other jobs you might consider include swapping out door knobs and levers, removing caulking around the shower or tub, and re-caulking the area, and the list goes on.
Even if you do not consider yourself to be a very handy person with household tools, there is an abundance of quality video tutorials online that will guide you through the process. You will be amazed at what you can do on your own and proud of the results.
Create Something Beautiful
There is something uplifting and empowering about creating something beautiful. Whether it is artwork or a piece of furniture, when you put yourself into the process of making something, it gives you a healthy sense of accomplishment while inspiring you to continue creating new things.
Try your hand at a DIY project the next time you feel like alone time is in order. Put on some music, a podcast, or turn everything off. Be one with yourself and get lost in the motions of putting the paintbrush onto the canvas or gently sanding a newly turned wooden bowl. There are so many options for easy arts and crafts that range from the fiber arts to jewelry making, that you are sure to find something interesting to try.
Write a Letter
Letter writing is not of a bygone era, or at least it should not be. You have the power to make someone’s day when they open their mailbox and see an actual handwritten letter waiting for them. Pick someone who you feel could use a friendly pick-me-up, or a person you think of fondly and often. Select some nice stationery, if you would like, and sit down with a good pen in hand.
Write to them about what you have been doing, talk about your shared history, or a moment from the past that you have been thinking of lately. Ask them how they are doing and dig a little deeper with specific, but non-intrusive, questions. Hopefully, they will write you back, and you can begin a new tradition of revisiting slower communications.
Take a Hike
Go on a nature hike all by yourself. If you happen to be a pet parent or want to bring a dog from a local shelter along, all the better. Nature is something that can be enjoyed with or without a group. Since you will be trekking solo, ensure safety is top of mind every step of the way. Let someone know where you are going, when you will leave home, and when you will return. Agree to contact them when you get home.
Always download a local or park map to your phone in case you lose internet connection, and keep a backup charger in your bag. Wear a hat and sunscreen, carry mace or bear spray, bring a whistle, dog waste bags, and pack plenty of snacks and water for both of you. Back to the hike, since you will be alone, you can really focus on what is around you in nature. Pay attention to the trees, birds, and the sounds. You might be surprised by what you hear when you are not surrounded by conversations.
Do Nothing at All
The ultimate suggestion for doing something on your own is to do absolutely nothing at all. This might seem like a tall order, especially if you are a very busy person who is always on the go, rushing from one thing to the next. If that is the case, then you could probably benefit from a do-nothing challenge.
Try sitting down in a comfortable place. Turn your phone face down and do not pick it up to scroll or check the news. Look out the window and observe what is going on outside. You can meditate, if you like. Make yourself a nice cup of coffee or tea and watch the birds having a meal at your backyard bird feeder. A bubble bath is a good idea, too. Just sit, breathe, and avoid doing anything of substance. Give yourself this small respite of time that is just for you.
When you want to do something on your own or need to be alone for whatever reason, you have a lot of options to occupy your time. Find something that works for you and enjoy the company of one.
