Local police are calling for the installation of talking CCTV cameras on a Beverley estate following complaints about gangs of rowdy yobs intimidadting residents. The CCTV cameras, which would cover an area outside the Samman Road shops and which would be monitored 22 hours a day, can help prevent antisocial behaviour by enabling police officers to talk directly to anyone causing problems.
Inspector Phi Hinch said: “When problems are seen developing they would be reported to officers which would give us more capability to deal with it before it escalates.
“We did really good work on the Swinemoor Estate at the beginning of the year trying to win the hearts and minds of the community, which I think we have achieved.”
“I don’t want to leave it as a sticking plaster, we are embedded in the community and we will work with the community.
“We can’t be there 24/7 but we want to enhance the safety of the people there and make it a better environment.”
Explaining how the system works, Insp Hinch said: “If we see something developing we can speak to those individuals via the CCTV to stop it escalating.
“We can say we are recording what is happening and we are en route.
“It’s a crime deterrent and it makes older people going to the shops feel safe.”
