To support your future career in the IOT you should make sure you keep your skills tuned in the following areas.
Ensure you are up to date with internet security solutions, i.e. end to end security. Refine your knowledge of how to implement sound security measures to the ever increasing number of devices and the data held within. It would also be an advantage to be able to apply tests to determine this security.
A knowledge of and/or ability to create accurate smart (IOT) sensors will be invaluable for a future career in IOT. For example, sensors that can detect: temperature, light, sound waves and pressure. A sound knowledge and understanding of wireless technology, such as WIFI, Bluetooth etc, which can be used to transfer data to the cloud.
Engineers of these wireless technologies must be able to create secure and reliable protocols that will work with Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) and small packets.
Vemula states that they should also be able to "gracefully handle congestion and able to scale on demand."
In order to be competent in domain privacy and security, a deep understanding of the business domain is essential. This will also be helpful to access regulations to which they must comply.
It is important to be aware of identification of structures and patterns within data along with data that is unstructured.
A knowledge of cloud management would be an advantage along with the ability to work with machines that compute in a cognitive manner and can for example imitate the thought processes carried about by humans.
