But it’s also easy to forget that many of the bigger services are still relatively young and have only been around in their current form for the past decade or so. With that in mind, which are the fastest growing spaces in online entertainment, and how do they shape up against each other?
Video-on-demand – The biggest services like Netflix have been a huge name for quite some time, but the latest big name to enter the market had been with Disney+ - recently announcing that they had well surpassed their target of reaching between 60-90 million subscribers by 2024, they had managed to reach 100 million in just sixteen months showing how quickly VOD entertainment is growing. With the recent news that box office releases will find their way to video-on-demand through HBO Max too, it’s expected that 2021 will be just as strong a year and help VOD services continue to find the huge success they’ve been finding.
Online gaming – It’s no surprise that gaming has made this list as huge markets like esports have brought gaming to many different households and changed the culture around gaming as a whole as attitudes have shifted to becoming much more acceptable – whether it be the big games on the dedicated systems, or even progression of different regulation and laws in states like Michigan that have led to different online gaming services growing in popularity like the lottery, gaming is certainly on the way up. With the newest consoles also seeing their release this past holiday season too, it seems a growing audience are jumping on the gaming hype train and exploring the new and beautifully designed worlds that modern gaming has to offer.
Online streaming – The other of the huge entertainment spaces online lately too has come in the form of livestreaming – whilst gaming makes up a huge part of the market, there has been a lot of movement into other spaces too such as IRL streams, art streams, and social spaces like Just Chatting – the biggest platforms like Twitch are only reporting huge surges upwards for numbers too as a growing audience becomes more interested in the streaming world, and as big celebrities and stars have started to branch out into streaming themselves, it’ll only help to bring a larger and more mainstream audience across too.
With advances in tech with the likes of 5G and more connectivity than ever before, online entertainment certainly shows no signs of slowing, and if anything will only speed up – the online space is bustling with choice, getting involved early will certainly help you better understand what the future may have in store too.
