Cambridge scientist dies in Spain train crash, with reports of award trip

A University of Cambridge scientist has died in a train crash in Spain. Tributes have been paid to the researcher, who worked at one of the UK's oldest and best-known universities.

One report says the scientist was travelling to collect a prestigious award when the crash happened. If that is correct, the journey was meant to mark a career achievement and ended in tragedy.

The same report says 69 people were killed in the Spain train disaster. That figure has not been repeated elsewhere, and it is attributed here to that one report alone.

The tributes

The death has been felt among colleagues and fellow academics in Cambridge, where the scientist was based. Tributes to the scientist have come from people who knew and worked with them.
