CCTV Cuts in Redbridge

According to the figures released by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the amount spent on Redbridge's CCTV cameras will be reduced from £383,000 in 2017-18 to £200,000 in 2019-2020 financial year.

£383,000 represents the net figure or the amount spent minus any income the council made. In 2017-18, the council brought in £364,000 income by charging other organisations, such as private companies, to use existing networks of cameras and operation rooms. The council spent £747,000 installing and maintaining surveillance systems in the same year.

Simon Blackburn, chair of the LGA's Safer and Stronger Communities board, said: "Public surveillance cameras have helped bring criminals to justice, increased conviction rates after crimes are detected, and are an important tool in tracking terrorist suspects.
