Revealed: The top, best-value locations for a self-catering UK summer holiday

TripAdvisor TripIndex Holiday Rentals has released a first-of-its-kind report that compares the cost of self-catering summer holidays around the United Kingdom.

The results were based on the combined average weekly costs of a two-bedroom holiday rental property, dinner out for a family of four, and basic grocery.

The report reveals that Shropshire, Dumfries, and Galloway offer the best value in this category. It shows that Shropshire is the most affordable destination on the list for just £566. This is at least 33per cent cheaper when compared to the figures gathered from Cornwall.

The report confirms that while the cheapest destinations are located on the north, the most expensive – Cornwall, Dorset, and Devon – are all found in the south. Prices for accommodation in Cornwall peak at £745 while those from Galloway are only £450.

As for the average cost of a family dinner out (two courses each for four people, a bottle of house wine, and two soft drinks) is about £82 in Lincolnshire and its about £120 in Devon.

James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesperson, said: “Self-catering holidays are a great way to keep costs down without comprising on quality.

"Holiday rental houses, apartments and cottages come with the privacy and space of home – like gardens and full-sized kitchens – and even in the most expensive destinations in our list, a week’s accommodation is still very affordable.”
