What are Yellow Vulture Speed Cameras

A lot has been said about the so-called "Yellow Vulture" speed cameras that were supposed to feature new technology powerful enough to catch motorists committing a whole range of offences, including eating or drinking while driving, using your mobile phone at the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt.

There had been several reports that the speed cameras are being rolled out across the UK after initial tests in the south-west of England proved to be successful.

The rumours about the "Yellow Vulture" speed cameras began to circulate when a set of cameras on a main road into Plymouth city centre was upgraded last year. Reports suggested that they are equipped with new technology designed to catch drivers for speeding as well as detect if a driver or a passenger isn't wearing a seatbelt.

However, Plymouth City Council said that the existing cameras on the road were simply recalibrated and confirmed that they did not feature advanced technological capabilities beyond regular speed cameras.

A spokeswoman said: "We did not install new average speed cameras on Gdynia Way – we just recalibrated the ones that were already there and installed additional lighting to improve image quality. The cameras are there only to enforce the speed limit."
