OpenAI valued at $1.25 trillion after funding round
OpenAI is reportedly valued at $1.25 trillion following a new funding round, as the race between the leading artificial intelligence developers moves into a more expensive phase.
The valuation places the ChatGPT maker among the most highly valued private companies in the world.
One report says OpenAI has raised an additional $11 billion as part of the round. That figure comes from a single outlet and has not been matched elsewhere.
Rivalry intensifies
The reported valuation arrives as rival Anthropic is nearing an IPO. A stock market flotation would open Anthropic's finances to far greater scrutiny and give public investors a direct stake in one of OpenAI's closest competitors.
The two companies have spent the past few years competing for customers, researchers and computing capacity. Both have relied heavily on outside investment to pay for the hardware needed to train and run their models.
OpenAI's tools are already in use in the UK, where ChatGPT counts businesses, schools and individual users among its customers. Anthropic's Claude assistant is also available to British users.
Investors watch for next moves
The scale of the OpenAI valuation, set against a possible public debut from its rival, is likely to shape how investors judge both companies in the months ahead.
