Tech giants sue California over teen social media law
Meta, Google and TikTok have filed a lawsuit against California in an attempt to block a state law designed to protect teenagers and children from the risks of social media addiction.
The legal action names California's attorney general as the defendant. The three companies are asking the court to stop the law from being enforced.
The legislation is aimed at limiting the addiction risks that social media poses to young users. Meta owns Facebook and Instagram, Google owns YouTube, and TikTok is operated by ByteDance.
The case pits some of the biggest names in the industry against the state over how platforms are regulated for under-18s. A court date has not been set.
